Xingyi vs Huangguoshu — which one should I pick?
They're different trips, and honestly the best answer is both — they sit on the same southwest Guizhou route and pair well together. Huangguoshu is the icon: Guizhou's famous waterfall, the one every domestic itinerary includes. Xingyi is the lesser-known multi-day destination around it: instead of one waterfall, you get the Wanfenglin karst peak forest, the Maling River Canyon gorge, Wanfeng Lake, the WWII 24 Turns hairpin road, plus a newer adventure scene — caving, SUP, via ferrata — and cliff coffee at 1,634 meters. The practical difference: Huangguoshu is a well-trodden day trip; Xingyi is a place you base yourself for three to four days and explore. Xingyi is also essentially a zero-English destination — signs, menus, and station announcements are Chinese-only — which is why the Visit Xingyi project exists: the English-speaking local team on the ground there. Getting there is straightforward: the Panxing high-speed rail put Guiyang–Xingyi at about two hours, and Xingyi's domestic airport connects via Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Kunming, or Zhuhai. If you only have one day, go to Huangguoshu. If you have three or more days, build the trip around Xingyi and stop at Huangguoshu on the way — the 24 Turns sits neatly on the Xingyi–Anshun route between them. Logistics for the whole southwest Guizhou circuit (routes, transfers, timing) are covered in English on visitxingyi.com.
