How to get to Xingyi

Until recently this was the hard part. In November 2025 the Panxing high-speed railway opened and Xingyi joined China's HSR network — now it's genuinely easy from any direction.

Map showing Xingyi in southwest Guizhou, with Kunming to the west, Guiyang to the north-east, and Guilin and Yangshuo far to the east
Xingyi sits between two things people have heard of. It is 220 km from Kunming and 245 km from Guiyang — closer to the capital of the next province than to its own — and it lies almost exactly on the line between the Yangshuo karst and Yunnan. We drew this ourselves from published coordinates: bearings and relative distances are true, but it is a diagram, not a navigation map.

By high-speed train

Xingyi's HSR station is Xingyi South (兴义南), opened November 2025 on the new Panzhou–Xingyi line. It connects at Panzhou to the Shanghai–Kunming trunk line, which means one-seat or one-change journeys from most of southwest China.

Guiyang 贵阳Direct HSR to Xingyi South — full guide~2 hours
Kunming 昆明HSR, change at Panzhou 盘州 — full guide~2.5–3 hours
Guilin / YangshuoHSR to Guiyang, then Guiyang → Xingyi South~5–6 hours total
Chengdu / ChongqingHSR to Guiyang, then onward~5–7 hours total
Hong Kong 香港Direct HSR West Kowloon → Guiyang, then Guiyang North → Xingyi South~7 hours total

Times are approximate — always check the live timetable when booking. Schedules on the new line are still being added to.

Coming from Hong Kong? There is a catch worth knowing before you book: Guiyang has two high-speed stations, trains to Xingyi leave from Guiyang North, and the Hong Kong service may land you at Guiyang East instead. We have written the route up in full — Hong Kong to Xingyi.

Buying train tickets as a foreigner

By air

Xingyi Wanfenglin Airport (ACX) sits just outside the city with direct flights from several major cities. Service is direct from Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Zhuhai — with other routes (Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing and more) varying by season. If no direct flight fits, flying into Guiyang (KWE) or Kunming (KMG) and taking the train works well too. Full details — fares, the airport 700 m from the high-speed station, and the evening-arrival rhythm — are on Flights to Xingyi.

Coming from Hong Kong or Macau? This is the shortcut most travellers miss: cross the border to Shenzhen (from Hong Kong) or Zhuhai (from Macau) and take the direct flight to Xingyi. Door to door it's usually the fastest international route into the karst country.

Everything is close. Wanfenglin is about 10 km from the centre of town and Maling River Canyon about 7 km — the canyon is essentially on the edge of the city. The airport and the high-speed station are roughly 700 m apart, so arriving by plane and arriving by train put you in the same place. Distances shown are straight-line; roads are longer.

The same thing on a real map

The diagram above shows how things sit relative to one another. Below is Google's map of the same area, for when you want to zoom in or navigate.

Once you land, this map stops working. Google is not reachable inside mainland China. Download Amap (高德地图, it has an English mode) before you fly — see Travel Tips.

The route nobody tells you about

If your China plan includes both Yangshuo/Guilin and Yunnan — the two classic stops of the southwest — look at a map: Xingyi sits almost exactly between them. Breaking the journey here costs you a few extra hours of train time and gives you the karst scenery of Yangshuo with roughly none of the crowds. We think it's the best-value detour in southwest China, but then we would say that.

We've written the whole thing up — timings in both directions, how long to stop, and an honest account of what the detour actually costs: the Yangshuo → Xingyi → Yunnan route.
