Pingyao International Film Festival 2026: the Chinese festival a foreigner can actually buy a ticket to

What it is

Pingyao is the festival Jia Zhangke built when he decided China needed a place for first- and second-time directors from outside the western festival circuit. Its self-description is “small in stature, large in outlook”, and the programming follows: the Crouching Tigers strand takes the first three features of international directors, Hidden Dragons the first three of Chinese-language directors, alongside premieres and retrospectives. The honours are named for Roberto Rossellini and for Fei Mu. The 2025 edition showed 54 films from 25 countries and regions, with roughly a third world premieres and every film a Chinese premiere.

The venue is as much of the draw as the programme. The Pingyao Cinema Palace is a converted diesel-engine factory in the northwest corner of the walled city — six screens, 2,200 seats, 3D and 4K — so the festival happens inside a UNESCO-listed Qing-era town rather than in a convention district.

Tickets: why this one is different

The standard barrier at Chinese cultural events is the ticketing account, not the ticket: platforms usually require a mainland mobile number to register at all. Pingyao's official site carries a “no Chinese mobile number?” link on its login page which switches to an English registration form asking only for email, gender and country. We walked through that flow on 22 August 2026 and it works.

• Buy: register and purchase on pyiffestival.com, or through the festival's WeChat account (PINGYAOIFF), or in person at the ticket centre inside the Cinema Palace, where staff will help.
• Limit: five tickets per user per screening. Sales are final — no refunds or exchanges.
• Collect: print at the self-service machines in the Cinema Palace ticket centre using your booking QR code.
• No identity document is required for the ticket itself, unlike many mainland events.
• The on-sale date is not announced. In 2025 the line-up landed on 17 September, a week before opening, and ticketing followed; expect something similar, and watch the site from mid-September.

Getting there, and the ancient city itself

Take the train, not the plane. Pingyao has no airport, and while Taiyuan Wusu (TYN) is about 90–100 km away, the high-speed rail is simpler: Pingyao Ancient City station sits on the Datong–Xi'an line with around 34 services a day — roughly 30–55 minutes from Taiyuan South, about 2.5–3.5 hours from Xi'an North, and about four hours from Beijing. The station is 8–9 km from the walls: bus 108 runs to the north and south gates, or a taxi is 15–20 minutes. The older, slower Pingyao station is a 15-minute walk from the west gate, which is worth knowing if you arrive at night with luggage.

One useful thing to know: walking the old city is free and its six gates are open around the clock, and you do not need the sightseeing pass to reach the Cinema Palace — West Street is inside the free zone. The pass is only for the two dozen ticketed courtyards and museums.
