Shanghai Fashion Week: you can't get into the shows, and that's not the point

What is and isn't open to you

Closed: the Xintiandi runway venue (electronic invitation only, industry and press), and Ontimeshow, which describes itself in its own English copy as the largest invitation-only fashion trade show in China — it registers buyers and exhibitors, not visitors. MODE Shanghai, the other trade fair, runs pre-registration for professional visitors; reports say foreign attendees can register against a passport, but we could not confirm that on an official page, so treat it as something to ask the organisers about rather than a plan.

Open, and genuinely worth timing a Shanghai trip around:

• Shanghai Fashion Weekend — the public weekend, in the Yongyuan Road blocks in Jing'an for the 2026 autumn/winter season.
• The Shanghai Fashion Carnival and 60-plus brand pop-ups and check-in points scattered across the city.
• The Shanghai Bespoke Fashion Festival, which ran 27 March to 6 April alongside the 2026 autumn/winter season.
• Exhibition programming timed to the week — the spring/summer 2026 season was paired with a new-Chinese-style show at the Shanghai History Museum.
• The runway venue's daytime display halls extend into public space, so parts of the set are visible from outside.

The organisers push a “city-wide runway” and “see now, buy now” model, with the electronic invitation doubling as a discount pass at participating shops. In practice the week turns a large part of central Shanghai into an open programme — which is the version a traveller can have.

When it happens

Two seasons a year. The autumn/winter season runs in late March — 25 March to 12 April in 2026, with the main schedule in the first week. The spring/summer season runs in October — 9 to 16 October for the 2026 season, which took place in October 2025, with the schedule published on 22 September, about two weeks ahead.

That short lead time is the practical problem: if you want to be in Shanghai for it, book the trip on the pattern and accept that the exact days land only a fortnight before. We will update this page when the next schedule is published.

Scale

The spring/summer 2026 season carried more than 4,000 new pieces premiered across the week; the 2026 autumn/winter schedule listed 70-plus brands across three strands — catwalk, trade fair and events. The official site has a complete English version, which is more than most Chinese events manage — but note that there is no English ticket page, because there is no public ticket at all.

Status: The next edition has not been scheduled publicly — we are not going to guess a month for it. This page carries what the last edition actually was, and is updated when the organisers announce. Held twice a year: a spring/summer season in October and an autumn/winter season in March. The autumn/winter 2026 season ran 25 March – 12 April 2026, with the main schedule 25–31 March. The spring/summer 2026 season ran 9–16 October 2025. The organisers had not published the next spring/summer schedule when we checked; for the previous edition it appeared in late September, about two weeks before the opening. Dates for the next season are not published. Several English listing sites show "9–16 October 2026" — that is the spring/summer 2026 date (which ran in October 2025) with a year added to it, and it has no official basis. We will publish the real dates when the organisers do.
