Kunming to Xingyi by high-speed train

One easy change at Panzhou, about 2.5–3 hours — and the karst valley Yunnan travellers keep missing.

In one line: Kunming to Xingyi is a 2.5–3 hour high-speed train with one easy change at Panzhou (盘州) — Kunming to Panzhou on the Shanghai–Kunming line, then the Panxing line into Xingyi South (兴义南). Xingyi is actually closer to Kunming than to its own provincial capital, which makes it a natural karst detour on the way in or out of Yunnan. Foreigners buy the ticket on a passport through Trip.com or 12306. Checked July 2026.

The route, plainly

There is normally no single direct high-speed train from Kunming to Xingyi; you make one change at Panzhou (盘州). It's a same-station transfer, not a cross-city scramble:

End to end it runs about 2.5 to 3 hours including the change. Book both legs together on Trip.com so the connection is sensible, and give yourself a comfortable transfer window rather than the tightest one offered.

Closer than you'd think. Xingyi is roughly 220 km from Kunming and about 245 km from Guiyang — so from the Yunnan side you're actually nearer than travellers coming from Guizhou's own capital. That's why Xingyi makes more sense as a Yunnan-edge stop than most maps suggest.

Booking as a foreigner

Pair it with eastern Yunnan

If you're coming from Kunming, you're passing the doorstep of Luoping (罗平), famous for the vast canola-flower fields that bloom in late February and March — one of Yunnan's great spring sights, and only a short hop west of Xingyi. Chaining Kunming → Luoping → Xingyi in canola season, or simply breaking the Yunnan–Guizhou journey here, turns a long transit day into two easy ones. Xingyi sits squarely on southwest China's classic overland route — see the Yangshuo → Xingyi → Yunnan route for the whole line, and best time to visit for the flower and rice seasons.

What about flying?

For this leg the train is usually the sensible choice — 2.5–3 hours centre to centre, cheap, and it leaves you 700 m from Xingyi's airport anyway. If a direct flight from Kunming (KMG) to Xingyi Wanfenglin Airport (ACX) happens to fit your dates it can be worth a look, but schedules vary by season, so check before assuming. Arriving at Xingyi South

Xingyi South station sits about 700 m from Xingyi Wanfenglin Airport — effectively one hub. From there it's roughly 20–30 minutes into the city and about the same again out to the Wanfenglin valley. A taxi or DiDi (China's Uber, works with an international card once set up — see travel tips) covers the last stretch.

Coming in from Yunnan with no Chinese? The change at Panzhou and a late arrival at a station with no English are exactly the moments a bit of local help earns its place. We can meet you at Xingyi South, sort your onward transfer, and answer questions in English before you travel — see what we arrange, or just message us on WhatsApp.
