One seat, one building for both borders, about five hours — and what Guizhou is actually for once you arrive.
Hong Kong joined China's high-speed network at West Kowloon, and Guiyang — the capital of Guizhou — sits directly on the line north-west. The direct trains take about five hours — when we checked a sample date in August 2026 there were three direct departures, all between 4 h 56 m and 5 h 03 m, with second-class seats around US$80–95. That is short enough to make Guizhou a realistic long weekend from Hong Kong, which is not something you can say of most of south-west China.
The part that surprises first-timers, pleasantly: all the border formalities are done at West Kowloon, in one building, before departure. You clear Hong Kong exit and mainland entry back to back at the station, then board with it all behind you. Arriving in Guiyang is just stepping off a train — no border queue at the far end.
Book several days ahead for weekends and Chinese public holidays (above all National Day, 1–7 October). The Hong Kong service is not frequent, and the Guiyang line is popular with domestic travellers. Visa and entry rules are a separate question — see Travel Tips.
The same trains run in reverse, Guiyang to Hong Kong West Kowloon in roughly five hours. Border formalities — mainland exit and Hong Kong entry — are again both handled at West Kowloon, after you arrive. Two practical notes: departures are limited, so fix your return date early; and double-check which Guiyang station your return train leaves from, for the same two-station reason as above.
Here is the fact that surprises people: there is currently no nonstop flight between Hong Kong and Guiyang. When we checked in August 2026, every Hong Kong–Guiyang itinerary on sale was a one- or two-stop connection via somewhere improbable — Beijing, Jinan, Haikou — taking eight hours or more. Do not book one of those; the train is faster and calmer.
If you want to fly, the trick is to cross the border first: from Shenzhen, nonstop flights to Guiyang take under two hours and run several times a day across multiple airlines; Guangzhou–Guiyang is a similar story, and Guangzhou South also has far more frequent high-speed trains to Guiyang (around four hours) than the handful of direct Hong Kong departures — so a change at Guangzhou South is the standard fallback when the direct train dates don't fit. And if your real destination is the karst country beyond Guiyang, there is a better trick still: skip Guiyang entirely and fly direct into Xingyi Wanfenglin Airport (ACX) from Zhuhai or Shenzhen. Guiyang is a pleasant, food-obsessed provincial capital, and an evening there is no hardship. But the reason Guizhou is on the map — the reason you are probably making this trip — is the karst country: nearly twenty thousand cone peaks around the Wanfenglin valley at Xingyi, plus the Maling River Canyon beside it. Since the Panxing high-speed line opened in November 2025, that is only about two hours from Guiyang North — the leg is written up on Guiyang to Xingyi.
